You can be a consultant in anything if you are organised and able to share professionally the skills you have. In some ways most of us are consultants already - a midwife is a person who will consult with you over ways to have your baby. People charge for consultancywork either by the hour, on a day rate of for piece work. Usually the more in demand you are, and the more money your skill saves / makes for the person booking you - will make the fee more. If you were a interior designer for example, in a town that had lots of them - you may find you have to compete with other designers and have a low fee. If you were good, and the only one - and your services were in demand you may be able to get a good fee.
Anything you are going to consult in you should check out your marketplace to see whether you are going national or local and if your services really are in demand. You can spend a long time designing website's/ business cards / letterheads / marketing material for a new idea in consulting, then find that no-one wants to book. Start small and build up gradually.
Look on other consultants website'sto get an idea of prices. Call other consultants as a client to get a day / hourly rate and find out what t hey include in their services. You need to make sure you are not missing anything that other consultants in your field offer, you need to offer similar or more to be competitive.
